What is a dermal filler?

A dermal filler is a substance doctors inject into the patient’s skin to add volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, deeper facial folds and brow lift.  Friedberg Eye Associates offers 2 types of dermal fillers: Juvederm and Restylane. How does it work?

Both Juvederm and Restylane are hyaluronic acid fillers and are completely inert, non animal tissue. When injected, they replace the volume the tissue has lost over time.

These dermal fillers are approved by the FDA for the treatment of nasolabial folds and other wrinkles in the skin. They work by adding volume to the skin, which causes the wrinkles to be less obvious. The added volume also makes the face appear fuller and more youthful for 1-2 years.

Who is a good candidate for treatment with dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are safe for almost everyone. Because they’re made from natural sources, they’re unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. However, dermal fillers may not be appropriate for patients who want dramatic, long-lasting results that aren’t possible without invasive plastic surgery.

What should patients expect?

The results of Juvederm or Restylane will appear almost immediately. However, the full results may not be evident for up to 3 weeks. In most cases, the results of these treatments will last 1-2 years depending on the treatment months. When the results begin to fade, patients can schedule a repeat treatment if desired.
